Winners Honored During Baylor Alumni Weekend 2022

Baylor School honored members of the school's community during the Head of School Awards and Memorial Chapel Service as part of the Alumni Weekend 2022 festivities. 

Baylor trustee and Chip Howalt '85, who also serves as chair of the board's advancement committee, was this year's recipient of the Distinguished Alumnus Award; former trustee Steve Bettis '84, was posthumously awarded the John T. 'Buddy' Fisher '46 Distinguished Service Award; and retired faculty members Eddie Davis (41 years of service), and Judy Millener (29 years) received the Dedicated Faculty Award. 

Mr. Howalt is a native of Dalton who attended Baylor as a boarding student from 1983 to 1985.  In addition to serving as a Baylor trustees since 2019, Mr. Howalt played an important role in the success of the Forever Forward capital campaign in 2018, was co-chair of the 2021 Celebrations biennial auction, and recently established a scholarship in honor of his late father, Harvey Howalt. 

Mr. Bettis, who died on Oct. 26, 2021, served on Baylor's Board of Trustees for two terms spanning from 2012 to 2019.  He and his wife Vivian, and their children Owen '16 and Olivia '19, loved Baylor's emphasis on a culture of excellence in academics, athletics, and extracurricular offerings, particularly the Baylor lacrosse program. 

Mr. Davis was a dedicated member of the Baylor staff for 41 years, serving as the head athletic trainer, a dorm parent, a member of the communications staff, and was the creator of the original Raider Recap that provide Baylor fans with daily sports updates online for more than an decade. 

Ms. Millener, a veteran Upper School Spanish teacher who also lived on campus for more than 30 years, was a volunteer for the community service program, helped create an organized the annual Martin Luther Kind "Day On" event, and even chaperoned her 20th prom last April. 

Eleven individuals were also inducted into the 2022 Baylor Sports Hall of Fame.  They included Allison Mitchell Bugenske '00 (soccer), Allen Carter '91 (basketball), Eddie Davis (athletic trainer), Will Hunt '89 (swimming), Bill Matthews '09 (cross country and track), Lara Newberry Phillips '05 (volleyball and softball), Sloane Pitman '09 (swimming), Jim Stover (swimming coach), Oliver Townsend '05 (cross country and track), Zach Watson '12 (wrestling), and Hannah Jumper Wilson '11 (cross country). A memorial tribute was given to each Baylor alum, faculty, or staff member who passed away in the last year, as well as a special remembrance of members of the Class of 1972 who have passed.

The event took place during Upper School Assembly so students could join the ceremony.
