Gladys Streeter Wooten, 90, of Jasper, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 23, 2022.

She was the daughter of the late Charles M. Streeter and Margaret Johnson Streeter. She was a lifetime member of the Mt. Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in South Pittsburg, Tn. She was Sunday School superintendent and pianist.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Della Mae Streeter, Charlotte Streeter Aker, brother; Charles Streeter, son; Donald Streeter, and devoted confidant Peggy Garth.

Left to cherish her memories include her brother, James W. (Joyce) Streeter; three sons, James Jarvis (Vickie) Wooten, Roderick Allen Wooten, Willie James Wooten, and daughter, Kimberly Gorda (Brian) Detari; grandchildren, Keith, LaToya, Joshua, Gerald, Alexandra, and Ebony; great-grandchildren, Ayana, Yasmine, Alexcia, Javien, Cayden, Tristan, Lexton, and Jelani; great-great-grandchildren, Ivory Rose and Ryann, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Gladys was employed by Tennessee Valley Authority for more than 20 years before her retirement.

She was fortunate to have retired in 1992, although she had stopped working for TVA her work for the betterment of her community did not. She continued her stewardship as Sunday School superintendent by being a role model and mentor to her students, by teaching the word of God, public speaking and Baptist leadership skills through the Robert’s Rules of Order.

She was a member of Southern Poverty Law Center which advocates for civil rights and public interest. She worked tirelessly to help elect political candidates who share in her core values.

Gladys created The National African American Historical Association of Marion County to preserve the history of historical buildings and property which included her alma mater McReynolds High School.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Rogers Funeral Home in South Pittsburg, Tennessee with Pastor Greg Ludy officiating

Visitation will be on Sunday, Dec. 4, from 2-3 p.m. at Rogers Funeral Home prior to the service in the Chapel.

God grant me serenity to accept things I cannot change, courage to change things I can and wisdom to know the difference.
