Dalton State Ends Season In Overtime Loss To LIndsey Wilson

  • Friday, December 2, 2022

The Dalton State men's soccer season ended on Thursday as the Cinderella story of the NAIA Men's Soccer Championship, Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), scored on a defensive miscue in the first overtime period to defeat the Roadrunners 1-0 at Jack Allen Soccer Complex in Decatur.

The Blue Raiders capitalized on a crucial Roadrunner mistake in the 94' when an attempt to reset for an attack went wrong as Frank Rodriguez and Michael Barrueta misjudged an oncoming attacker that led to Sadam Masereka sneaking in for a steal, beating the out-of-place Dalton State goal-keep for what would be the game-winning goal.

Dalton State (Ga.) ends the season at (16-2-3 overall) with the loss, while Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) improves to (13-6-4 overall) with the win and advances on to the semifinals to face Mobile (Ala.).

The Roadrunners will hit the pitch again in 2023 as they look for the programs first national championship.

Michael Barrueta was tested more than he was all season and proved why he was the SSAC Golden Gloves Award winner with 5 tough saves on the evening.

Lindsey Wilson carried the shot lead at 14-8 overall and 6-2 on frame. Dalton State had a few good looks early but could not capitalize on the opportunities.
