SAR Awards Local Students For Poster Contest

The John Sevier Chapter of the Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution conducted an awards ceremony on Tuesday for this school year’s Elementary School Poster Contest for local students sponsored by the chapter who earned District and State Level recognition and awards.

The ceremony consisted of recognizing students for their participating at the District and State levels of the SAR National Competition and awarding two students State level prizes for their poster art. The competition began prior to the Christmas holidays with students submitting applications and permission slips to join the competition. The John Sevier Chapter selected three posters to represent the chapter to the district level of the competition. The district in turn selected three posters to move on to the state level part of the competition.

Prior to the 12 March Annual Conference for TNSSAR members of the society had an opportunity to vote for a first, second and third place awards and prizes online. Society members attending the conference also voted in person for the state level awards.  

Miss Makenzie Yates is the Second Place Winner for TNSSAR at the State level. Ms. Yates was presented the SAR’s Outstanding Citizen Certificate and Pin with a prize check for $60 by past state president Charles Dammann.  Miss Yates is a student at Skyuka Hall in Chattanooga.  

Mr. Joseph Cowley is the Third Place Winner for TNSSAR at the State level.  Mr. Crowley was presented the SAR’s Outstanding Citizen Certificate and Pin with a prize check for $35 by past state president Charles Dammann.  Mr. Cowley is a student at Skyuka Hall in Chattanooga.  

Ms. Yates, Mr. Cowley and Gabe Sims all received the TNSSAR District Three participation certificate from District Director George Ison.  

TNSSAR’s 2021-2022 Annual Elementary School Poster Contest winner was Miss Stella Russell form Selmer, Tn.  Ms. Russell was awarded the SAR’s bronze good citizenship medal and certificate along with a prize check for $100 and will represent Tennessee in the National level of the competition to be held at the Society’s Annual Congress on July 10 in Savannah, Ga.

The Elementary School Poster contest alternates themes every other year between revolutionary war period events and people.  The contest is open to all third, fourth and fifth grade equivalent students who study the Revolution as part of their history lessons in school or in a civic group like scouts.
