Poppie Announces Addition Of Wazeerud-Din To Mocs’ 2022-2023 Roster

University of Tennessee at Chattanooga head coach Shawn Poppie announced the addition of Yazz Wazeerud-Din to the 2022-23 women’s basketball roster.

“I am extremely excited about the addition of Yazz to our women's basketball program,” Poppie said. “Yazz checked all the boxes when it came to what we were looking for in this initial recruiting class.

We love her length, versatility at multiple guard positions and ability to put the ball in the basket.”

Wazeerud-Din, a Marietta, Ga., native, comes to the Scenic City from Stetson. Over the last two years she wracked up 767 points for the Hatters with 99 3-pointers while shooting 40.7 percent from the field. She is a two-time all- conference performer in the ASUN, earned Player of the Week honors and was a two-time ASUN Newcomer of the Week.

She made 50 starts in 56 games for Stetson and recorded a career-high 30 points and eight rebounds against North Alabama. Wazeerud-Din drained a career-best six 3-pointers against Jacksonville and made 10 free throws against Northern Arizona.

Against North Florida in her first season with the Hatters, Wazeerud-Din hit the game-winning 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime, the first for Stetson in 10 years. She also hit a buzzer-beating trey against Jacksonville to close out the first quarter with a school-record 18 points in the frame. She was 6-of-6 from the floor including four shots from beyond the arc and connected on both free throw attempts. She finished the game-high 28 points.

Last year, she helped Stetson advance to the semifinal round of the ASUN Tournament for the first time since 2017. In her first season, the Hatters earned a spot in the Postseason Women’s Basketball Invitational. Stetson defeated Loyola Chicago in the first round before falling to Cleveland State in the next round.

Prior to her arrival at Stetson, Wazeerud-Din, a 5-11 guard out of Wheeler High School, earned NJCAA All-America Honorable Mention in her sophomore season with South Georgia Technical College. She led the team in scoring and finished in double digits 25 times while shooting 50 percent from the field and 45 percent from distance. She ranked seventh in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (.449), 11th in assist-turnover ratio (2.5) and 23rd in steals (90). She was named to the GCAA All-Conference First Team and to the all-tournament team while also earning GCAA All-Academic Team honors.

She helped the Lady Jets to its fifth consecutive Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association regular season championships with a 17-0 mark while reaching a record-setting 30-2 overall record in 2019-20. SGTC also earned a fourth-straight NJCAA Region XVII Tournament title, fourth consecutive Southeast District championships and helped her team advance to the NJCA National Championship that was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Lady Jets were undefeated (35-0) in conference play over her two seasons and won back-to-back district and region championships.

“I believe we can continue to build on what she has already accomplished as a student-athlete,” Poppie said. “Outside of the lines, there was an immediate connection with Yazz and her family. There is no doubt that Yazz and her family fit our culture perfectly here at Chattanooga. Yazz comes from a large family that is super supportive and I cannot wait to have them in the stands here at McKenzie Arena next fall.”

She joins Brooklyn Crouch as a newcomer on the Mocs 2022-23 roster. Season tickets will go on sale soon for the women’s basketball season.
