Eleanor Alexander Cunningham of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Siesta Key, Florida, was born on May 15, 1924, in Johnson City, Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Richard (Dick) H. Cunningham, parents, Verdon E. Alexander and Charlotte Hogan Alexander, brother, Don Alexander, Jr. and nephew, Dr. Andrew Alexander.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Rick) H. Cunningham, Jr. daughter-in-law, Carole and grandson, Rhine and his wife (Daniella) of Castle Rock, Co.; nephews, Brian Alexander of Leesburg, Fl., and Carter Alexander of Suwanee, Ga.

Eleanor was blessed with an incredibly full life! She cherished her family and her many friendships over the years through her various activities which included book clubs, garden clubs, bridge clubs, dinner clubs, golf outings, and traveling in the U.S. and abroad. She loved nature and being outdoors. She especially loved her time at the beach or on the bay at Siesta Key, FL. For the past 26 years, Eleanor enjoyed entertaining and socializing with many of her very close friends and people she considered second family at The Continental Condominiums.

She was an active member of First-Centenary United Methodist Church and the Morgan Sunday School class where she served on the Board of The United Methodist Women and the Altar Guild. Eleanor and Dick were also long-time members of the Yomaco Sunday School Class where many of their life-long friendships all began. Her numerous civic involvements over the years included residing on the Board of the Chattanooga Girls Club, Hunter Museum of Art, Senior Neighbors, President of Valamont Women’s Club, Riverview Garden Club, North Chattanooga Book Club and Northside Neighborhood House.

She was a graduate of Chattanooga High School and Sullins College. The genuine love she showed to her family and friends with her amazing mind and words will truly be missed by all who knew her. Our family would like to extend our deepest appreciation to Kim Walker’s Caregivers. We extend a very special thank you to Kristie, Ashley, Jamie, and Donyell for their unwavering love, care, and support of Eleanor.

Her funeral service will be held at First Centenary United Methodist Church, 419 McCallie Ave., Chattanooga, on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service in the church narthex from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. A reception honoring her life will be held following her funeral at The Continental Condominium, 1414 Continental Drive, Chattanooga, Tn. 37405.

In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial donations be made to First Centenary United Methodist Church.
