Rhea Animal Shelter Gets Jolly Visitor Bearing Treats

  • Monday, December 25, 2023

Before Santa Claus started his Sunday night trip, He made a quick stop at the Rhea County Animal Shelter on Saturday afternoon to make sure all the four-legged friends got a good Christmas treat.

Santa (County Commissioner Leo Stephens) brought a fresh tuna and shrimp meal for the cats and fresh chicken and vegetables for the dogs. He brought enough to where the staff was able to feed the treats again on Sunday and Monday.

This was the first time something has been done like this since the inception of the Animal Shelter by Sheriff Mike Neal in 2008.

While Commissioner Stephens was there, several local people brought dog food, cat food and treats for everyone. One lucky dog, a little chihuahua, got his forever home Saturday.

Animal Shelter Director Cheyene Swafford said the Shelter appreciated all the donations but would like to say they are in desperate need of cat litter, treats and blankets for the animals especially since winter is coming on.
