Turkey Habitat Field Day Scheduled For Catoosa Wildlife Management Area

  • Thursday, May 4, 2023

The public is invited to a field day, with a focus on managing fields and forests for turkeys, which has been scheduled for May 20 on Catoosa Wildlife Management Area (WMA). Various topics including the use of prescribed fire and timber harvest will be discussed.

Don Chance, Catoosa WMA manager, will host the event. The field day will include information on turkey nesting, brood (young) cover, food sources for poults (young turkeys) and predation. Mr. Chance said, “We will start by looking at typical forest conditions found within the state then look at areas intentionally managed for turkeys and discuss food and cover resources.”

Participants will leave with an understanding of the positive effects of prescribed fire, timber harvest, and how these management practices provide for turkeys. Participants will also gain knowledge on food plots and other turkey management information. Those interested in turkey hunting or anyone with an interest in how areas on Catoosa are managed are welcome to attend. Registration is required at gooutdoorstennessee.com.
