Board Worked Through Over 30 Agenda Items As Well As Classification Discussion

The TSSAA Board of Control met in Murfreesboro this week, addressing over 30 agenda items in meetings held on June 6 and 7, 2023.

Four schools were approved for membership in the association. Chattanooga High Center for Creative Arts, James Lawson High School, KIPP Antioch Global High School, and Sevier County Junior High School were all approved for membership in TSSAA.

Financial reports for the basketball, wrestling, and bowling tournaments were approved as well as the financial reports for the A.D.

and Cheer Coaches conferences.

The Board approved the proposal submitted by The Webb School (Bell Buckle) for their girls’ basketball team to move to Division II-AA for the upcoming classification cycle (2023-2025). The Board also asked the Legislative Council to revisit the residency rule in regards to Division II schools.

A change in the format to bowling competition was approved by the Board. Competition will consist of American 10-pin games and Baker games as well as total pin fall. The format for 2023-24 will be two games of American 10-Pin and two Baker games. In Division I, individuals will qualify for the state tournament by competing in their respective regional tournament. The top six from each region will advance to the state tournament based on total pinfall.

The Board of Control heard a report by the staff in regard to the number of coaches ejected, disciplinary action and unsportsmanlike incidents investigated during the 2022-23 school year. In addition, the Board voted to continue the A. F. Bridges Awards Program this upcoming school year, allocating $27,000 in award money for the 27 winning schools.

A change to the 2024 Girls’ Soccer State Championships was approved by the Board. The postseason tournament dates will conclude a week earlier and coincide with the volleyball calendar for 2024.
