Tommie F. Brown Book Club Launched At Hutchins Academy

  • Wednesday, July 26, 2023

Marie Mott, founder of Hutchins Academy, said the school has launched a book club.

She said, "In the heart of our city, a transformational movement has taken root. The Tommie F. Brown Book Club, an integral part of Hutchins Academy's co-ed mentorship program, has sprung to life, igniting a passion for reading and knowledge that will undoubtedly shape the destinies of our brilliant youth.

"Named after the trailblazing Tommie F. Brown, the first African American female professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and a former state legislator, this club has become a beacon of hope, bridging communities and cultures to empower our young minds.

"As the founder of Hutchins Academy, I stand in awe of the tremendous support from our community members, who have generously purchased 64 books for our library. This outpouring of support is not just about filling shelves; it represents a collective commitment to uplifting our children, regardless of their backgrounds and nurturing their academic and personal growth. We are eternally grateful to those who have contributed to this transformative initiative.

Our first literary journey begins with Booker T. Washington's "Up From Slavery," a powerful memoir that delves into the complexities of the past while inspiring a future of resilience and progress. Through this literary exploration, our students gain historical awareness and an understanding of their identity, culture, and the strength within them.

"The Tommie F. Brown Book Club is not confined to literature alone. We are proud to join hands with The Enterprise Center and Tech Goes Home to ensure that every student in our program can access a Chromebook. By equipping our youth with computer literacy skills and the ability to conduct research and complete assignments, we empower them to navigate the digital age confidently and competently.

"At Hutchins Academy, we recognize that academic success is not merely about memorizing facts or acing exams. It is about fostering a love for learning, a passion for discovery, and a profound connection to one's heritage. Through our mentorship program and the Tommie F. Brown Book Club, we strive to root the identity of our students in their culture, creating well-rounded individuals who embrace their uniqueness and take pride in their roots.

"The success of the Tommie F. Brown Book Club and Hutchins Academy as a whole would not have been possible without the unyielding support of our community. To those who wish to join us on this transformative mission or seek further information, please contact us at admin@thehutchinsacademy.com."
