UTC Golf Wins Bearcat Invitational

  • Tuesday, September 19, 2023

Two up, two down for the Chattanooga Mocs men’s golf team. The Mocs captured their second win in as many events cruising to victory at the Bearcat Invitational. The squad’s final round 279 (-5) overturned a 2-shot deficit to start the day into a comfortable 8-stroke triumph.

The Mocs took the lead early in the final round and never looked back. The margin rose to double digits before settling at eight. Louisville was second (846) followed by BYU (849), Cincinnati (852) and Florida Gulf Coast (856). The Cardinals’ Sebastian Moss was the individual winner with 12-under 201.

“I can’t express just how proud I am of these guys,” Coach Blaine Woodruff beamed. “They continue to impress me with how much they embrace competing. Two events in a row, we’ve had our backs against the wall and responded.

“The discipline and execution today from all five guys was incredibly impressive.”

Paul Conroy paced the effort with his second 3-under 68 of the week. Samuel Espinosa shot 69 with Garrett Engle right behind at 70. John Houk added 72 to the counting scores with Braedon Wear’s 74 serving as the drop score.

Conroy and Espinosa turned in top 5 performances ending in third and fourth, respectively. Conroy’s 7-under 206 was two better than the Spaniard’s 208 (-5). Houk tied for 15th tallying level-par 213. Wear was two behind at 215, while Engle finished with 219.

The Mocs have a month off before returning to Greenville, S.C., to defend their Furman Intercollegiate title. The Paladins host the event Oct. 22-23 at Furman Golf Club.
