Covenant Women, Maryville Play To 1-1 Tie

  • Wednesday, September 20, 2023

Covenant welcomed conference rival Maryville to Scotland yard for its second CCS match of the year. In a match that could've gone either way at the end, Covenant settled for a tie with Maryville.

A handball on Maryville inside the opening seven minutes gave Covenant a penalty kick. Leah Marr made no mistake with the opportunity by putting the ball into the right of the net. Lucy Sandhoff made her first save of the night in the 24th minute keeping a shot at the bottom left of the goal from going in. Maryville had three corner kick opportunities in a span of five minutes, but could not capitalize with a goal.

At the half, Covenant had outshot Maryville 6-4

Sierra Lee tied the match for Maryville with a right-footed strike off a pass across the box from Hannah Smoot in the 55th minute. In the 77th minute, Smoot hit the crossbar on a breakaway chance for Maryville. Marr had a free kick from just outside the box that grazed the woodwork in the 85th minute, but somehow did not go in.

A few minutes later, from way out, Marr had another free kick with this one just going over the top of the net.

Covenant had a 15-11 advantage on shots and had nine on goal. Corner kicks were 7-2 in favor of Maryville. Each team committed seven fouls. Marr's goal was the 10th of her career.

Covenant welcomes Asbury to Lookout Mountain on Saturday for a nonconference game at 1 p.m.
