As Walker County property owners begin to see their property tax bills, many of you are likely experiencing sticker shock. I understand your frustration – I feel it too. That's why I voted against the recent tax increase.
The problem is deeply rooted in how Georgia funds education statewide. We're trapped in a maze of regulations that punish fiscal responsibility. Case in point: if we lower our millage rate below 14, we stand to lose millions in state equalization funds.
Taxes can be lowered. It will take a complete overhaul of Georgia's antiquated education funding system. And that’s exactly what I’ll be working and fighting for as your school board member.
It's time to scrap the QBE formula and replace it with one that funds students, not systems and programs. Imagine a system where money follows the student, not the bureaucracy. Where parents have the power to choose what is best for their children. Where public schools offer a menu of high quality offerings. Where our talented Walker County teachers are empowered to innovate rather than being shackled by top-down directives from Atlanta.
It requires school board members to stand up, speak out, and challenge the powers that be. The days of quietly deferring to the superintendent and rubber-stamping budgets must end.
I'll push for greater transparency in how your education dollars are spent. I'll advocate for policies that empower our local schools and teachers, rather than out of town bureaucrats.
You deserve a school board member who understands the immense duty they owe to you, the citizens. One who understands the complexities of education funding and isn't afraid to tackle them head-on. Someone who will fight for your interests as taxpayers while also ensuring our children receive the high-quality education they deserve.
The choice before you is clear. You can elect someone who will watch silently as your taxes rise and our schools struggle under an outdated system, or you can vote for me, Tina Painter ready to challenge a broken system and fight for real, lasting change.
Tina Painter, Walker County School Board Member
