The Tennessee Lady Vols, using their patented swarming defense, forced 30 turnovers en route to knocking off #17 Iowa, 78-68, on Saturday night.
The inaugural Womens Classic Championship tilt was close until the Lady Vols pulled away in the closing minutes. It was tied 35-35 at the half. Tennessee was up 55-52 at the end of the third quarter.
The Hawkeyes led 67-64 after an Addison O'Grady free throw with 3:48 left, but Iowa did not score again until making another foul shot with just 39 seconds on the clock.
Meanwhile, South Carolina transfer Talayshia Cooper had two layups and two jumpers as the Lady Vols pulled away.
A Tess Darby three-pointer on an assist from Cooper was another dagger for Tennessee as the game wound down.
Hawkeye Lucy Olsen, the talented Villanova transfer, had 23 points to go along with some highlight assists. O'Grady scored 17.
Hannah Stuelke, a key part of Iowa's Caitlin Clark-led team last season, was held to eight points. Kylie Feuerbach also scored eight.
Ruby White, who came to Tennessee from Clemson, scored 16 points.
Darby and Samara Spencer had 11 each.
