UTC Women Close Out Home Schedule With UNC Greensboro

  • Friday, February 23, 2024
McKenzie Arena will host one last Chattanooga women’s basketball game this season with the team closing out its home schedule on Saturday by hosting UNC Greensboro at the Roundhouse.

Fresh off of earning the program’s 23rd Southern Conference regular season title, the Mocs (23-3, 11-0 SoCon) will now play in front of their home crowd one last time with the Spartans (17-10, 6-6 SoCon) coming to town on Saturday. UNCG currently sits fourth in the league standings.

While the Mocs may have already locked up the regular season crown and subsequent No.
1 seed in the upcoming SoCon Tournament, UTC still has much to play for as the team is just three more wins away from putting together the sixth undefeated SoCon regular season in program history.

Tipoff for Saturday’s game is slated for 2 p.m. ET with coverage being provided by ESPN+ and WFLI 104.3. Live stats will be available through GoMocs.com and can be found on the UTC schedule page.

The Chattanooga Mocs enter their final home game not only undefeated in the Southern Conference, but riding a 12-game win streak that spans all the way back to the turn of the New Year. UTC is also currently on an 11-game home win streak at the Roundhouse, with the Mocs aiming to notch one last win onto that streak in this weekend’s home finale. The Mocs actively rank first in field goal percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage in the SoCon, alongside having the fifth-best scoring defense (53.4 points allowed/game) in the entire NCAA. UTC is led by Jada Guinn, who is scoring a phenomenal 18.6 points/game this season, ranking second in the Southern Conference. Her, paired alongside Raven Thompson’s 14.8 scoring average, makes for a deadly duo for opposing teams to manage.

UNCG finds itself in the midst of a tightly contested midtable of the SoCon standings, with the Spartans currently clocking in as the No. 4 seed if the season were to end today. With that being said, the No. 2 and No. 5 seeds are currently only separated by two games, meaning that every win for the Spartans from here on out could make a major difference when the team makes its way to Asheville. UNC Greensboro is an extremely well-rounded team, currently outscoring their opponents by 7.9 points this year and outshooting their opponents 40.7 percent to 37.6 percent from the floor. The Spartans are led by Jayde Gamble who leads the SoCon in steals (2.2/game) alongside averaging a team-high 13.5 points/game.

The last time these two teams met was in Greensboro earlier this year, as the Mocs handed the Spartans their first and only loss at home this season in a convincing 73-55 statement victory. Raven Thompson (19 points) and Jada Guinn (18 points) led the charge for the Mocs offensively in the game, while freshman Caia Elisaldez tossed in a then-career-high of 14 points as well. Thompson and Addie Grace Porter both logged nine rebounds a piece in the UTC win.
