Gregory “Greg” Lewis Hardaway, 70, of Chattanooga, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024, at his residence.

He was born in Chattanooga, on Oct. 23, 1953, to Adam and Ella Mae Hardaway who preceded him in death. Greg lived his formative years in Chattanooga, and Cedartown, Ga. He moved to Brooklyn, New York at the beginning of high school where he attended and graduated from George W. Wingate High School, in 1970. After graduation, he entered the Air Force where he served three years. After leaving the military, he attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga while trying his hand at many occupations including security, auto mechanics, and bus driver. Settling on auto mechanics and obtaining trade certifications, he worked for several auto shops in the Chattanooga area before retiring.

Greg was brilliant. He loved reading and discussing history, politics, sports, and religion with anyone willing to listen. Later in his life, he discovered the art of barbecuing. Often saying he inherited the skill from his great-grandfather, he became the best in the family. His meat was the center of attention at the many family gatherings. Even more than grilling, Greg loved capturing memories of moments and time with family and friends. It was an obsession, so much so that he also became the family photographer and video recorder of every event he attended. Thanks to him family and friends have invaluable volumes of precious moments preserved. Greg was a member of Westside Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Walter J. Harmon.

Greg is survived by his daughter, the joy of his life, Stacey Foster of Hogansville, GA; step-mother, Hilda Hardaway; brothers, Joseph Hardaway and Ricky (Charlotte) Hardaway; sisters, Amber (Walter) Harmon, Sandra (Jerome) Gober, all of Chattanooga, and Bonita (James) Terry of Texas; along with nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many special friends.

Gregory will lie in state on Friday, April 5, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. in the chapel with Elder Walter G. Harmon officiating.
