Hixson resident Nancy Jean Newsome Henderson, daughter of the former LTCol (USAF) Carl Alan and Sue Powell Newsome, passed away on Friday May 17, 2024, at the age of 77.

Nancy was a graduate of the University of California Santa Barbara where she met the love of her life, James Chadwick “Chad” Henderson, who preceded her in death after over 50 wonderful years of marriage.

A loving wife, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her daughter, Susan Amelia Henderson, and son, Colonel (USA) Brian Jasen Henderson, his wife, Aimee Troxler Henderson, their son, Carsen Pace Henderson and daughter, EllaJane Darby Henderson. Nancy was also survived by her furry best friend, Emma Lee.

Nancy worked tirelessly to improve communities everywhere she went as a leader of organizations such as the Clean Community Commission and National Cancer Society in Martinsville, Va., the Hospital Auxiliary in Camden S.C., and the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) in Hixson. She also impacted countless lives as a high school substitute teacher in Virginia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Nancy joined the Nancy Ward Chapter NSDAR in 2008. She served as various committee chairs including Membership, Service for Veterans, and Conservation. She developed and led initiatives such as “Socks for Vets” and “Hats and Scarves for Veterans.” She was personally responsible for 16 new NSDAR members and was constantly promoting society. She loved taking pictures and was the unofficial candid photographer at functions for many years.

Her warmth, generosity, humor, and wisdom will be remembered and deeply missed by all who knew her.

A memorial service will be held at Hamilton Funeral Home on Tuesday, June 18, at 6 p.m. Friends and family are invited for visitation from 4 p.m. until the time of service.
