After clinching the TSSAA Division II Class AA title last month and going undefeated for the year (15-0-1) there wasn’t much else for the Blue Tornado to accomplish, but on Tuesday it diFor the first time in school history, MaxPreps rated McCallie the No. 1 team in the country for the spring season.

“It’s definitely a dream come true,” said coach Chris Cushenbery. “And to have it with this group of guys is just so special. These guys never cared who got the credit, just that they did it as a team. Just an incredible season.”

Executive athletic director Kenny Sholl agreed. “The amazing thing about this team is that it had several key players who probably couldn’t have played on some of our other teams,” said Sholl. “But these guys all played for the good of the team. They were a true team.”

He also had special praise for Cushenbery, noting, “We all grow as coaches, and Chris has certainly done that. He’s always been a tremendous X and O guy, but this year wasn’t just about Xs and Os. This team had a chemistry and a camaraderie that’s special, and Chris deserves a lot of credit for that.”

This was McCallie’s first undefeated season, its first state title since 2019 and its fourth overall state title.
