The Bessie Smith Cultural Center announces the inaugural Bessie Smith Legacy Gala, presented by Kazee, Inc., to be held on Oct. 19 at the Chattanooga Convention Center. This distinguished black-tie event will celebrate individuals who have significantly contributed to enhancing and positively impacting the quality of life in Chattanooga.
The evening will include a gourmet dinner, entertainment and an award presentations. Funds raised will support the mission of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, ensuring the continuation of its cultural and educational programs.
A highlight of the evening will be the unveiling and presentation of a specially commissioned bronze award sculpted by artist Alex Paul Loza. This sculpture of Bessie Smith will be presented to the following esteemed honorees or their families: Dr. Tommie Brown, Dr. Roland Carter, JoAnne Favors, John P. Franklin, Sr., Moses Freeman, Vicky Gregg, Franklin McCallie, Reverend Paul McDaniel, Irvin Overton, Dr. Edna Varner and Judge Walter Williams.
The Bessie Smith Legacy Gala stands as a tribute to the enduring impact of individuals who have profoundly enriched Chattanooga’s cultural and social tapestry. Named after the legendary blues singer whose soulful voice once echoed through the heart of the city, this gala celebrates those whose contributions have not only uplifted the community but have also fostered a spirit of resilience and unity. Through their dedication and vision, each honoree embodies the essence of Bessie Smith’s legacy, illuminating the pathways toward a brighter, more inclusive future for all residents of Chattanooga.
