The Bessie Smith Cultural Center announces the inaugural Bessie Smith Legacy Gala, presented by Kazee, Inc., to be held on Oct. 19 at the Chattanooga Convention Center. This distinguished black-tie event will celebrate individuals who have significantly contributed to enhancing and positively impacting the quality of life in Chattanooga.

The evening will include a gourmet dinner, entertainment and an award presentations. Funds raised will support the mission of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center, ensuring the continuation of its cultural and educational programs.

A highlight of the evening will be the unveiling and presentation of a specially commissioned bronze award sculpted by artist Alex Paul Loza. This sculpture of Bessie Smith will be presented to the following esteemed honorees or their families: Dr. Tommie Brown, Dr. Roland Carter, JoAnne Favors, John P. Franklin, Sr., Moses Freeman, Vicky Gregg, Franklin McCallie, Reverend Paul McDaniel, Irvin Overton, Dr. Edna Varner and Judge Walter Williams.

Through their dedication and vision, each honoree embodies the essence of Bessie Smith’s legacy, illuminating the pathways toward a brighter, more inclusive future for all residents of Chattanooga.

“We are excited to host this inaugural gala, which not only honors the legacy of Bessie Smith but also celebrates the incredible individuals who have and continue to uplift and enrich our community,” said Paula Wilkes, president of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. “Their contributions have made a lasting impact, and we are proud to recognize their dedication and service.”
