The Covenant College women's soccer team hosted Oglethorpe on Wednesday night looking to bounce back from its first defeat of the year. With the help of a spectacular goal from Blythe Jelley, the Scots did just that.
Mae Pierce and Hannah Ford had Covenant's first shot attempts in the 12th and 14th minute, both missing out right. Covenant keeper Brownyn Kickasola made one of her two saves in the game in the 22nd minute. At the intermission, the Scots had outshot the Stormy Petrels 5-1.
The Scots brought up the offensive pressure as AnnaLi Weekley and Emma Riggs each had shots saved one minute out from each other. The next big chance for Covenant fell to Clara Norris as her shot in front of goal was saved in the 63rd minute. Tess Duble nearly opened her Covenant goal count in the 73rd minute as she blasted a shot from outside the box that bounced off the crossbar.
In the 75th minute, the Scots finally got their goal off a wonder-strike from Blythe Jelley assisted by Gretchen Caswell that was just outside the right side of the box.
The game got physical in the final 10 minutes with three different yellow cards issued, but Covenant held on to get the win and the clean sheet.
Covenant moves to 6-3 all-time against Oglethorpe. The Scots outshot the Stormy Petrels 12-3 and had a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Covenant had four corner kicks while Oglethorpe had one.
Each team committed 10 fouls.
The Scots have eight days off before playing No. 10 Emory at home on Thursday, Sep. 19.
