It’s Match Week in the Scenic City with the Chattanooga Wrestling Mocs opening Southern Conference action on the Maclellan Gym mat. This week brings just one matchup on the calendar with the Mocs hosting Campbell on Sunday.
The Mocs are coming off a successful Southern Scuffle. Four reached their respective podiums which ties 2012 and 2024 for the second-highest total in program history. The program’s best was seven in 2006 when the event was still in Greensboro, N.C.
Sophomore Sergio Desiante earned the squad’s first Scuffle championship winning at 174.
His journey included two top 10 wins over No. 4 Lennox Wolak (Va Tech), 7-6 in the semifinals, and No. 10 Gaven Sax (Oklahoma), 3-2 in the finals. Both matches, Desiante dictated with an early takedown and excellent work staying true to the game plan.
Junior Blake Boarman added a second Scuffle trophy to the mantle. He claimed fifth at 133, while true freshman Bryce Luna shook off an opening loss to fight through the wrestle backs to finish eighth. Jackson Hurst added a sixth at 165.
Match Slate This Week
Sunday, Jan. 19: Campbell | Maclellan Gym | 2 pm | Tickets
The Mocs are 1-6 on the year with a win over CSU Bakersfield and losses to four ranked opponents as well as two others – Princeton and Purdue – that were nearly ranked at the time of matchups. The Camels are 1-7 with a similar resume. They own a win over Cal Baptist with four ranked losses and three to other well-regarded programs. This is an opportunity for both to build early momentum in the conference race.
