Frances L. Barnes McPherson, 98, of Chattanooga, passed away on January 16, 2025.

She was born in Rossville, on July 29, 1926, to the late Jonas and Della Barnes. She was a licensed practical nurse with Memorial Hospital for over 20 years and retired from there. She met the love of her life, James at the Brainerd Church of Christ and were wed on October 29, 1955. They subsequently began a family and had three daughters, Janet, Cynthia and Karen. She was very active in the church serving many roles, including Inner-City, Ladies Bible Class, and The Clothing Room. She was a servant first and foremost, always doing for others. She and James were members at Brainerd for over 50 years. After the closure of Brainerd Church of Christ, she joined Central Church Christ where she has been a member ever since.

Frances was a beach lover through and through. She would take her kids and grandkids to the beach every summer. She enjoyed traveling with her sister and friends on numerous occasions, even taking a trip to Alaska.

Preceding her in death were her husband of 57 years, James O. McPherson, her parents, Jonas and Della Barnes, brothers, J.D. and Raymond Barnes, sister, Beatrice Goggins and son-in-law, Joseph Brantley.

Survivors include her daughters Janet McPherson, Cynthia McPherson Howard and Karen McPherson Brantley; grandchildren Matthew Howard, Joshua Howard, Aaron Howard and Scott McPherson, and a great-grandson, Gabriel Howard.

A Celebration of Frances’ Life will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Chattanooga Funeral Home East Chapel at 12:30 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10:30 a.m. She will be laid to rest with her husband in the Chattanooga National Cemetery at 2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Matthew Howard, Joshua Howard, Aaron Howard, David Howard, Scott McPherson, and Gabriel Howard.
