Lee Tennis Wins 7-0 Pair Over Shorter University

 The Lee University tennis teams posted a pair of 7-0 wins over Shorter University Monday afternoon at the DeVos Tennis Center. Both the Lady Flames and Flames improved to 2-0, while both Shorter teams dropped to 0-1 for the season.

Maria Penalver Aguilo and Kanna Kobyakawa opened the women’s doubles competition with a 6-0 win over Laura Moraz and Sydney Wright. Ashleigh Simes and Aliyah Dwyer secured the doubles point with a 6-0 defeat of Sharita Gula and Sophia Arellano. Vitoria Maximiliano and Mirjana Ragastovac completed the doubles sweep with another 6-0 win.

Penalver Aguilo dropped just one game to Arellano in a 6-0, 6-1 win at No.
2 singles. Simes posted the same score against Gula to put Lee up 3-0. Dwyer held off Moraz 6-4 and 6-3 at the third spot to clinch the team win for the Lady Flames.

Kobayakawa shut out Danielle Hernandez 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles. Ragastovac was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Wright at No. 4 singles and Maximiliano blanked Katice Ferrell 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to secure the shutout.

In the men’s match, Wihan van der Merwe and Stefan Mos beat Carlos Tubio and Mario Molina-Mari 6-0 to begin doubles competition. Filipe Krohn and Jackson Vaughan shut out Agustin Yap and Frederico Roman 6-0 to secure the doubles point and put Lee up 1-0.

Quinn Groenendijk and Jip Langerhuizen completed the sweep with a 6-1 defeat of David Arrieta Gomez and Sebastian Gamaez.

The Flames went up 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 win by van der Merwe against Arrieta Gomez at No. 1 singles. Groenendijk beat Gamez 6-0 and 6-3 to push the Lee advantage to 3-0. Langerhuizen held off Roman 6-3, 7-5 to clinch the team victory for the Lee men.

Mos blanked Tubio at No. 4 singles to continue the Lee shutout attempt. Rytis Razminas silenced Yap 6-0, 6-3 at the fifth position and Vaughan completed the shutout with a 6-3, 6-2 score against Molina-Mari.

Lee is scheduled to return to the courts on Saturday, February 22, against Tusculum University. The non-conference competitions are set for 1 p.m. at the DeVos Tennis Center.
