The Lee University softball team earned their third and fourth road wins of the season with a doubleheader sweep of King University on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Flames easily won game one 9-1 and then hung on to win 5-2 in the second game. Alexa Scalzo led the way for the Lady Flames with four hits and three run scored in the two games.
Game 1
Natalie Pruitt-Geesey continued to pitch well, earning her Gulf South Conference best, 11th win of the season. She threw four innings and gave up one run on two hits and had two strikeouts.
Layne Bailey threw the final two innings of the game and gave up just two hits.
Lee got the first two runs of the game in the top of the second. Hailey Simco singled and Rylee Price walked to get two on base. Rylie Goodridge then doubled to score Simco. Natalie Toups then hit a sacrifice fly to score Price.
The Lady Flames added three runs in the third. Ana Macha scored on a Javaria Smith double. Then a double steal attempt led to an error by King and Smith scored. Simco scored the final run of the frame on a sacrifice fly from Price.
Two more runs scored in the fifth for Lee when Goodridge had a two RBI single to score Simco and Smith. King University got their only run of the game via a walk, stolen base, and a single in the bottom of the fifth.
Lee scored their final two runs in the sixth when Smith drove Scalzo home and then Simco brought Macha home.
Smith had three hits, two RBI, and two runs scored in the first game. Goodridge added three RBI on three hits. Simco had three runs scored while Macha had two runs scored.
Game 2
Madison Barnett got her third win of the year as she threw all seven innings and gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out two.
Lee jumped on the board quickly in the top of the first as Scalzo led it off with a double. After a groundout, Scalzo then scored on a wild pitch and Lee led 1-0. King tied it in the bottom of the first, using a walk and a double to make it 1-1.
The Lady Flames struck back in the top of the second inning. Alyson Jarvi and Ava Perkins were walked to start the inning. Then, Kaylee Wilson reached on an error to load the bases. Bella Galloway, coming back off of an injury, drove in two runs with a single to center field and Lee led 3-1. The Tornado pulled one back in the fourth using a couple of singles to bring a run home.
The Lady Flames added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. After a Wilson single and a Galloway sacrifice bunt, Scalzo doubled to drive Wilson in to make it 4-2. Kadyn Smith then drove Scalzo in to give Lee the 5-2 win.
Scalzo was 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored while Galloway added two RBI.
The Lady Flames will return home this weekend to take on a red-hot Mississippi College team that has won nine straight games and 12 of the last 13. Lee and MC will play in a double header on Friday, March 14 starting at 2 PM.
