In the first Gulf South Conference game of the season, Lander University scored eight goals in the second quarter on the way to a 15-7 win over Lee University on Saturday afternoon. Lee dropped to 2-8 on the year and 0-1 in GSC play. Lander improved to 9-2 and 1-0 in GSC play.
The Lady Flames scored the opening goal of the game on the first possession. Freshman Emelia Tippett took a pass from Makenna Luzier and gave Lee the lead just 90 seconds into the contest. Lander scored a goal about five minutes later to tie the game.
The Bearcats then scored with 30 seconds left in the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead after the one period of action.
Lander added two quick goals to start the second quarter to go up 4-1. Then the Lady Flames responded with a goal from Taylor McGovern. Lander scored twice more before Hannah Vecsey scored her first goal of the game on a pass from Luzier. The Bearcats added four more goals to lead 10-3 at the break.
Lander scored the first three goals of the third quarter before McGovern scored her second goal of the game for Lee. Kamille Kremkau found McGovern to give Lee their fourth goal.
Lee scored quickly in the fourth quarter. Luzier found Vecsey for her second goal of the game and then McGovern found Sweeney for her second goal of the game. McGovern scored her third goal of the game on a man up goal as Luzier got her fourth assist of the game. Lee outscored Lander 3-2 in the fourth.
McGovern had three goals and an assist while Luzier had four assists. McGovern had five shots with all five on goal. Savannah Weisman had seven saves in the contest.
Lander outshot Lee 31-15 with a 19-11 advantage on shots on goal.
The Lady Flames will stay on the road in the Palmetto State. They will play at Converse University on Monday, March 24 at noon.
