Johnnie Lynn Haslerig Scruggs was born on Wednesday, September 20, 1944.

Her parents, James A. and Cecial Haslerig took great pride in their only child whom they raised in Knoxville, Tn. On Monday, March 17, 2025, Johnnie Lynn peacefully transitioned to eternal rest.

After attending school in the Knoxville City School System, Johnnie Lynn graduated from Austin East High School in 1961, and attended Knoxville College where she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1966. Upon graduating, she moved to Chattanooga where she taught in the Hamilton County School System. She later joined Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company where she worked for over 20 years as an underwriter.

Johnnie Lynn was married to the late Booker T. Scruggs, II, with whom they shared one son, Cameroun, her pride and joy. Aside from parenting, she devoted decades of time and resources to a number of community service, cultural and enrichment organizations, including the Chattanooga Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc., Chattanooga Chapter of The Links, Inc., Church Women United and the Pi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

During Cameroun’s formative years, Johnnie Lynn was an active member of Wiley Memorial United Methodist Church. She later joined Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) Catholic Church. She will always be remembered as a kindhearted, jovial, endearing and extraordinary person with a compassionate heart for people and her pets.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her son and his father, as well as John and Carolyn Alford with whom she had a special sisterly bond.

Survivors who remain to cherish Johnnie Lynn’s (aka “Nana”) memory include her loving and dedicated grandson, Marquise K. Scruggs, his aunt and uncle, Renita and Desmond Humphrey, Esq., all of Atlanta, GA; Marquise’s mother, Angelia Marchbanks of Knoxville, TN; Johnnie Lynn’s godchildren: Quintin and Johnita Alford of Chattanooga, TN and Liz Willis of Nashville, TN; cousins: Joyce Haslerig (Thomas) Harrison and Delores Haslerig (Robert) Hodges, both of Chickamauga, GA; a loving, loyal and supportive companion, Gatha Logan; and a number of relatives and lifelong friends.

Public viewing will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, followed by a 1 p.m. chapel service. Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
