Georgia Adds 6,900 Jobs In March As Unemployment Holds Steady At 3.6%

The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) announced today that Georgia's March unemployment rate was 3.6%, unchanged from a revised 3.6% in February. The unemployment rate was six-tenths lower than the national unemployment rate.

“Georgia’s job market is full of opportunity, with nearly 5 million jobs and three openings for every Georgian,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “As labor commissioner, I’m committed to working alongside the governor, lawmakers, and job creators across the state to connect talent with opportunity and ensure Georgia remains the No. 1 state for business for years to come.”

Jobs were up 6,900 over the month and up 23,100 over the year to 4,979,500.

The sectors with the most over the month job gains included health care and social assistance, 3,100; information, 2,400; administrative and support services, 1,300; management of companies and enterprises, 1,100; and durable goods manufacturing, 800.

Jobs were down over the month in transportation and warehousing, -3,200; accommodation and food services, -1,100; professional, scientific and technical services, -400; finance and insurance, -300; and arts, entertainment and recreation, -200.

The sectors with the most year over year job gains included health care and social assistance, 22,500; local government, 4,200; federal government, 4,100; state government, 3,700; and finance and insurance, 3,100.

Jobs declined over the year in administrative and support services, -8,700; accommodation and food services, -5,500; retail trade, -4,600; transportation and warehousing, -3,100; and durable goods manufacturing, -2,500.

The labor force was down 6,619 over the month to 5,384,258 and down 2,928 over the past 12 months. The number of employed was down 6,654 to 5,192,115 and down 14,039 over the year. The number of unemployed rose by 35 to 192,143 and was up 11,111 over the year.

Initial unemployment claims were down 1,168 over the month to 19,296 in March but up 1,449 over the year.
