Despite playing the best round of the day, it wasn’t enough for the Lee University men’s golf team to overcome the lead the University of West Florida had as the Flames finished in second place at the Gulf South Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Flames shot a 286 in round three to finish the tournament with an 888.
UWF won the tournament by 30 strokes with a three-day total of 858. Delta State finished in third place with a score of 900. The University of Montevallo was fourth with a 906, and Valdosta State University had a 912 to come in fifth.
George Cordall was the highest finisher for the Flames.
He shot a 220 (73-71-76) to come in tied for seventh. Bennett McNabb was ninth place with a 221 (76-77-68).
Luke Stock was tied for tenth with a three round total of 222 (74-75-73). Drew Zielinski jumped 16 spots after shooting a 69 in round three. He was 17th with a 227 (80-78-69). Mitchell Strickland was the final finisher with a 78-78-76 for a 232 finish for 24th place.
The Argos took the top four individual spots with Fabian Wennerlof taking home the individual medalist. He won by three strokes with a 212 (71-71-70).
The Flames will now prepare for the NCAA South/Southeast Regional on May 8-10 in Howey in the Hills, Fla.

“The big positive we can take from this week is the finish we had today. Kind of a tale of two nines today as the wind was strong on the front nine and then died down on the back nine. We got a little rhythm going and that was something we can take forward into regionals.”
