Joseph “Joe” Winston Alligood, 90, of Rossville, Georgia passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025.

Joe was born on July 24, 1934 in Sewanee, Tn., to Milton and Martha Jane Alligood. He was a graduate of both St. Andrews and The University of the South (Sewanee) where he excelled at basketball; and that talent followed him through his service in the U.S. Army.

In 1955, he eloped with Betty Short Alligood, his wife of 60 years until her passing in 2016. Known for his wit, Joe never met a stranger and could talk fishing, gardening, SEC sports, and his beloved Atlanta Braves at all times. He was also a proud member of Christ Church Episcopal in Chattanooga where he frequently attended services. After retiring from the Rossville Yarn Mill in 1999, he spent his time gardening, helping with grandchildren, hanging out with his friends, and watching any western on TV.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Martha, wife Betty, sister Betty Carolyn, and son James “Jimbo.”

Left to cherish his memory include two daughters: Vikki (Dana) and Carrie, four grandchildren; Emily (Mark), Libby (Scott), George (Kristena), Bailey (Charles); and six great-grandchildren; Jaxon, Juliet, Georgie, Frankie, Amilia, and Aubrey. Their beloved Poppa Joe will be deeply missed!

Visitation will be held at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., Chattanooga on Saturday, April 12, starting at 4 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 5 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions in Joe’s memory be made to Hosanna Community, 6410 Grubb Road, Hixson, Tn. (https://www.hosanna-community.org/)
