Paul F. “Pete” Slayton, Jr., 83, of Rossville, Georgia, passed away of natural causes on Saturday, June 28, 2025.
Paul was born and raised in the Chattanooga area, attended City High school, and was of the Baptist faith. Pete was a 50 year member of Local Millwright Union 654 in Chattanooga. He was a construction superintendent at Sequoia and Belfonte Nuclear Plants. Pete worked as a millwright in the Chattanooga, Nashville and Knoxville areas all throughout his career. He started a lifelong passion for racing at a young age with his father. Specifically, dirt track and asphalt racing, and he drove until he was 32 years old. At that point, Pete built and owned racecars for over the last 50 years and enjoyed many wins and successes with many drivers who raced in the Chattanooga area.
Sissy was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Paul Sr. (Jewell) and Dorothea Elizabeth Slayton; his wife of 62 years, Harriett “Sissy” Slayton; his son, Paul Fred “Freddy” Slayton, III; his sisters, Reva Jo Curd and Emily Suzette “Jenny” York; his brother, Timothy Bryan Slayton.
Survivors include his sons, Denny Slayton, Kenny (Lisa) Slayton; grandchildren, Kenneth Slayton, Jr. and Savannah Slayton; his sister, Elizabeth Paulette “Becky” Beaty; many in-laws; and several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2, at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home & Crematory, Rossville. The family humbly asks everyone to dress casually for the services as per Paul’s request.
Graveside services will be held at noon on Thursday, July 3, at Lakewood Memory Gardens, South.
