Emmy Govan West, of Lookout Mtn., died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at St. Barnabas Nursing Home.
Mrs. West, a native of Chattanooga, was a graduate of GPS then UTC. She worked for TVA and the U.S. Census Bureau. She was a well-known author with her first book "Katy No-Pocket," written in 1944, still in print and available in seven languages. Her family was well known (Govan-West-Steel family) as Southern authors. In all, she and her family authored over 200 books.
Mrs. West was also an active volunteer in the comomunity. She volunteered with the Hamilton County Juvenile Court, the American Red Cross, and the libraries of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain. She also served on the board of directors of the Hamilton County Humane Society and was named Humanitarian of the Year in 1990.
She was survived by her son, Dr. G. Norman West; daughter, Ellen Grady; grandson, Nathan West; brother, James Govan; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on Friday at 4:30 p.m. with Rev. Hunter Huckabay and Rev. Sam Payne officiating.
The memorial service will be followed by a reception in the Kay-Andrews Hall.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the following: the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Discretionary Fund, the Humane Educational Society, and Hospice of Chattanooga.
