$450,000 Lawsuit Filed Against Red Lobster On Food Poisoning

  • Monday, November 11, 2002

A man who said he suffered food poisoning at the Northgate Red Lobster on June 21 is suing the restaurant for $450,000.

Gary Cook said he became "deathly sick" after eating shrimp and other items at the restaurant.

The suit, filed by attorney Conrad Finnell of Cleveland in Hamilton County Circuit Court, says the food "was contaminated with poisonous bacteria and other harmful substances."

Health officials said one person in Hamilton County died from salmonella poisoning and 178 others became ill after eating at the restaurant June 20-23.

The city-county health department said it was not able to pinpoint a particular source that caused the salmonella outbreak at the restaurant.

The report said it could not trace the outbreak to a particular food or person. It said more than one food may have become contaminated under unsanitary conditions.

Health officials said they had two training sessions at the restaurant on cleanliness since the outbreak.
