Nonie Webb Has New Book On Marion County

  • Thursday, February 28, 2002

Nonie Webb has written a new 430+ page book entitled “Keepsake Memories” of Marion County, which is Volume II of her historical publications.

The Marion County author and historian talks about the first settlers and showcases old photographs, maps and old post cards in a chronological story of how Marion County grew from a Cherokee Nation into an incorporated city.

The book took her three years to complete.

“It’s all about the Cherokee ancestors, and their side of the story, starting with the whites taking over the Indian lands and goes through the control of the whites encroaching on their land,” Ms. Webb said. She said such influential leaders as Dragging Canoe, Tecumseh and Sequoyah are featured.

Ms. Webb will have book signings at the three branches of First Volunteer Bank, including March 1st, South Pittsburgh; March 4th, Jasper; and March 8th at Whitwell.

Her new book will be on display at all three public libraries in Marion, and at Parker’s Drug Store in Jasper. For every book sold at the libraries, $5 will go toward purchase of books for the library.

The book includes paintings and drawings from local artists, hundreds of old maps, and rare old photos and postcards of the people and places in Marion County (with overflow into Chattanooga area).

The book, available in soft or hard bound, "contains the largest collection of documented Marion County historical accounts ever, with the names and at least one listing of every first settler from Indian days to 1840. The book is fully indexed and contains three individual Indexes - one each for Cherokee, Black and First Settlers -by first name and where to find the information.

Ms. Webb said the effort began in 1995 when the late Sammie Martin Truitt called her and told her about an old map that had just “resurfaced” after being buried in her boxes of genealogical papers for about 30 years.

Ms. Truitt had copied it some 30 odd years ago while helping her Uncle, J. Leonard Raulston do Marion County research for the book “Sequatchie.” She was able to restore the map and it has been widely reproduced.
