The Chattanooga Juneteenth Association sponsored a poster and essay competition for students in Hamilton County Schools and the winners, from Dalewood Middle and Brainerd High, were recognized at the February School Board meeting.

They are: Kristian Carr, Corey Davis, DeMarcus Finnell, Jerico Hawkins, Candice Hudson, Jermaine King, Aisha McGee, Brandon McGee, Ian Norwood, Shayla Reynolds, Joyre Sims, Shanese Summerow and Ashley Whiteside.

Also pictured are School Board member Charles Love, Dalewood Principal Linda Darden and several teachers.

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. Dating back to 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and the slaves were now free.
