Pickle Barrel Gets 10-Day Suspension On Owner Drinking

  • Thursday, January 4, 2007

The Pickle Barrel has been given a 10-day suspension of its beer license based on drinking at the establishment by its owner.

Nick Bowers was charged in early August with DUI, and he told officers some of the drinks he had were at the Pickle Barrel.

Bowers told the city Beer Board on Thursday morning that he actually was drinking at Parkway Billiards, but was "trying to protect them" when he said it was at Pickle Barrel.

He said, "Looking back I see how stupid it was."

The Beer Board was shown a video in which Bowers said he had four drinks over several hours, including one at Midtown Music Hall. He said during the evening he was at Pickle Barrel, Midtown Music Hall, Parkway Billiards and then back to the Pickle Barrel.

He said he had three "Ice Picks" and a beer.

Police said his vehicle was stopped at an intersection on Georgia Avenue in a 3:30 a.m. incident. He was stopped a short time later on the Veterans Bridge.

Bowers told police he has sleep apnea and apparently fell asleep at the intersection.

He said he was on his way to his residence on Baker Street in North Chattanooga.

The suspension starts next Thursday.

Officer John Collins said it is the second recent 10-day suspension for the Pickle Barrel.

He said the first came last month when he caught Bowers drinking a mixed drink at the Pickle Barrel.

The Beer Board also issued a 3-day beer license suspension to J&J Lounge on Glass Street.

The club was cited for not calling police about an incident on Nov. 3 that later spilled over into a fight on Dodds Avenue.

Police said they went to 3308 Dodds and found a fight in which beer bottles and a baseball bat were being used.

A woman with a bat as a weapon ended up getting a severe cut, it was stated.

The women said the fight started at J&J Lounge.

Alex Watkins, who heads security at the club, said the women argued but did not exchange blows at the club. He said they were sent away separately. He said police are not called on every argument.

Ken Fritz, assistant city attorney, said clubs are supposed to call police on "all fights and public disorders."

Leslie Burgess, one of the club owners, said the board should focus on the people involved in the fights rather than punishing the club owners.

She also said, "Even when we call police, no one is ever arrested."

Officers said there was no arrest in the Dodds Avenue fight because the woman who was injured could not identify her assailant.

J&J Lounge did not get a penalty in connection with another incident on Nov. 24.

Police said they found 20-30 people fighting outside the club and 100 other people watching. All officers from East Chattanooga and East Lake were called, then officers were also summoned from as far away as Highway 58 and East Brainerd.

The fight was dispersed and no one was arrested.

The board did not punish the club after managers said 9-1-1 calls were made to the police when the incident started inside the club.
