Students Ellen Sawyer, Patrick Ward and Tyler Ross encourage the St. Jude Saints to concentrate on “d fence” in the first annual Irish Bowl at Notre Dame High School. The Saints lost to cross town rival, the OLPH Rams but both schools showed spirit and character in the contest.
Saints cheerleaders, left to right, Blair Barker, Juli Stolpmann, Carmen Brady, Molly Gadd, Anna Lawson, Lacey Mahoney, Amanda Clarke, Erin Freeman, Janey Dearing, and Katie Boynton, helped keep the action alive and the crowd enthused.
Mrs. Tiano’s fourth grade class dressed up as individuals who represented the theme, “be the change you want to be.” Students choose likenesses of Jackie Robinson, Susan B. Anthony , Anne Frank, and even a St. Jude mom, the late Kate McGuire, mom of seventh grader, Joe McGuire, who chose to spend her final days battling cancer in quiet dignity at home with her family. These fourth grade students understand the true meaning of sacrifice and service.
Eighth grade students, led by Student Service Leader, Jake Dilbeck, organized a canned food and sock drive for the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.
In three days, students in grades first through eight collected over 1000 cans and an additional 1000 pairs of socks for those in need.
Dogs and Pot Belly Pigs (not to mention birds, snakes and hamsters) greeted each other and were blessed at the annual Blessing of the Animals held for members of the St. Jude School and Parish on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi. Pastor, Father Joe Brando conducted the warm and welcoming service.
Father David Carter, assisted by Kindergarten students, Domenic Mariani and Nole Shutte, blessed a new statue of the Infant of Prague in Mrs. Millard’s kindergarten classroom. The statue and much of the classroom furnishings are recognized in memory of the Day family. Bob Day and his sister, Dorothy Cunningham, were special guests at the presentation.
