Gladney, Julia Josephine Bork

Julia Josephine Bork Gladney, 85, died peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning, March 12, 2008 in Chattanooga.

Julia was born in Chattanooga on May 13, 1922. She was a 1941 graduate of Notre Dame School. In the summer of 1941 she married Thomas Harold Gladney. They lived in various cities in the Tennessee Valley as necessitated by his position with TVA before establishing permanent residence in Chattanooga in 1958 with their five children.

Julia volunteered her work in support of St. Jude Catholic Church and School. She was active in the religious education program of the parish, helping to raise funds, cleaning the church sanctuary, working with the Ladies of Charity, visiting the sick and homebound, and wherever else her assistance was needed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Harold Gladney; a son, James Gladney; her parents, Edward Louis Bork and Pearl Devaney Bork; five siblings: Mary Jessie, Martha Stagmaier, Edward Bork, Catherine Bork, and John Bork.

She is survived by her four children, Gail Cooper (Farrell), Signal Mountain; Thomas Gladney (Donna), Crestwood, Ky.; Ronald Gladney (Laura), Hixson, Tn.; Cheryl Lehman (Edwin), Louisville, Tn.; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Gladney, Alachua, Fl. Also surviving her are fifteen grandchildren, Kathryn Corley (Jack); Jeanne Manley (David); Laura Reed (Steve); Christopher Cooper; Jeffrey Gladney; Timothy Gladney (Amanda); David Gladney; Stephanie Queen (Chad); Shaun Gladney (Jennifer); Scott Gladney (Becky); Leslie Gladney; Christopher Lehman; Amy Lehman; Kathryn Lehman; Kelly Lehman; 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Julia’s grandsons will serve her as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Church or to a charity of choice.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, with a short prayer service being observed at 4 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Jude Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Saturday with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
