  • Wednesday, April 29, 2009

The Creative Discovery Museum is offering a full menu of camps for children. Half-day camps are available for children ages four and five and full-day camps are offered to children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

There are opportunities for children to participate in Friends Discovery Camp, a camp specifically designed to address the social and recreational needs of children with autism, and day camp experiences at the Science Theatre at Northgate Mall.

Children will spend lots of time in the museum as well as participate in many exciting activities based on the theme of the camp. The activities will range from performing magic tricks and concocting delectable culinary delights to exploring the mysteries of the night sky and getting into entertaining adventures with Curious George.

“Camps at the Museum are so fun for kids, because we focus on topics that appeal to many ages and interests,” said Lynne Mulligan, Creative Discovery Museum’s program manager. “From cooking to spending time outside, to animals, art, magic, and books, our variety of experiences to offer children is unique.”

Friend’s Discovery Camp Summer 2009
Now in its tenth year, Friends’ Discovery Camp is the result of a unique partnership between Creative Discovery Museum, Siskin Children’s Institute, and UTC. Friends’ Discovery Camp is for children with autism and children who would enjoy being a buddy to children with autism.

The camp is specifically designed to address the social and recreational needs of children with autism, while offering kids without autism a unique opportunity to be buddies with a child that may be different from their other friends. Each camper and his/her buddy are closely supervised by a UTC student (Big Buddy) who ensures that both children have fun.

Summer Camp at Science Theatre at Northgate Mall
The challenge is on at Creative Discovery Museum’s Science Theatre at Northgate Mall. Amazing Race Summer Camp 2009 will keep adventurous campers guessing. Adventurers are put to the test as they use their knowledge and learn new skills as the Amazing Race moves them to a new location each day.

“Amazing Race Camp is the best camp I have ever run or participated in,” said Science Theatre Manager Karen Dewhirst. “The kids and counselors love every minute. The camp incorporates mystery, science, riddles and puzzles, travel, culture, food, games, money and prizes! What’s not to love?”

Campers also strategize with a team on how to spend their hard earned Amazing Race Bucks to ensure there is enough money to solve the daily mystery. Teams learn interesting and fun facts about each location while developing valuable skills in managing money with the Amazing Race Bucks component of the camp.

“Amazing Race Camp 2009 will be even better than 2008 with the addition of our new climbing wall feature, our large, bright workshop space and our own daily travel excursions,” said Ms. Dewhirst. “Even those who attended last year can come back for a new and exciting experience.”

Half Day Camp for ages 6 – 8:
Session 1: June 22 – June 26

Full Day Camp for ages 6 – 11:
