We hadn’t been to Lillie Mae’s Place since the first year they were open. Recently I’ve been getting E-mails from people reminding me about their breakfast, so we decided to make a return visit to 4712 Dayton Boulevard for a Saturday morning breakfast. The place was packed and we had to wait about 15 minutes to be seated.
There are three pages of breakfast items! I made my choice from the Breakfast Specials section, priced at $3.75, including drink (coffee, tea or soft drink). The two items under this section were either two pancakes with bacon or sausage or two eggs, also with bacon or sausage, a choice of grits or gravy and toast or biscuits. What a great deal!
I ordered the two eggs with sausage, grits and biscuits. When the server asked how I wanted my eggs, I asked if she thought the cook would know how to prepare soft scrambled. She said she felt sure they would, so I said “no one else does, so I’m going to give it a shot”. You would not believe my eggs. They were absolutely PERFECT!!! I don’t understand why other restaurants can’t figure it out.
Wayne decided on the three egg Country Man Omelet ($6.75) prepared with ham, bacon, sausage, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cheese and sour cream. All omelets are served with biscuits or toast and gravy or grits.
In addition to the usual breakfast items, Lillie Mae’s has sandwiches, biscuit sandwiches, French toast and oatmeal. Breakfast meats include a 10-ounce ribeye, pork chops, grilled chicken, country ham, smoked ham, and bologna.
Monday through Friday they offer daily specials such as chicken fried steak, homemade salmon patties, and meat loaf. The 21 side items include fried green tomatoes, fried squash, turnip greens, white beans, dressing and mashed potatoes. The specials are priced at $5.95 and include two veggies, bread and drink. The Friday special is $6.95 and is a choice of fresh breaded catfish or a six-piece large shrimp plate, both of which include slaw and hush puppies and a choice of fries or fried corn on the cob.
Daily menu items include chicken livers, smoked roast beef, chicken and dressing and several other entrees priced from $6.25 to $10.95. Lillie Mae’s also has sandwiches, burgers and homemade desserts.
Lillie Mae’s is a place that offers good southern cooking at a very reasonable price and has certainly built a following. For some reason, the building reminds me of a small warehouse.
Hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. (breakfast served until 11:30 a.m.) and Saturday until 1:00, when breakfast is the only meal served.
