Philip Earl Heaton, 74, of Hixson, died on Thursday, February 25, 2010.

Born in Miami, Fl., to the late Robert L. Heaton and Grace L. Heaton, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 34 years, Barbara Ann Heaton.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in law, Dr. Frederick and Valerie Thompson; grandsons, Philip Taylor and Samuel Madison Thompson; chosen daughter, Nancy Guth of Trinidad, and three nieces; brother, Robert L. Heaton and twin brother, Paul Heaton, both of Miami, Fl.

Philip graduated from Miami Jackson High School where he was football quarterback.

He served in the United States Army in Germany in the Infantry and Tank Division. He enjoyed sharing many stories of those days with family and friends.

Philip was a Christian who lived his life as a true servant. He was a youth director for many years in Miami, Fl., at Grace Baptist Church. He was happy to open his life and home to missionaries and others over the last 50 years. He was always willing to share anything he could with anyone who needed it.

He was a carpenter by trade and built swimming pools for many years in South Florida.

He moved to Chattanooga in 1975 and received his BA degree from Tennessee Temple University.

He retired from the City of Chattanooga in 1999 after working for 20 years at the Chattanooga-Bicentennial Library, where enjoyed many friendships.

In his retirement years his joy was to be with his grandsons and spending annual family vacations at the Gulf.

He enjoyed a manicured yard and was an avid Bird Watcher. His life's hobby and sometimes biggest frustration was his love of the game of golf. He was serious about his game and course etiquette. He spent many hours filled with friends on the links.

The family wishes to especially thank Hospice of Chattanooga for their assistance and willingness to support our father and family.

Arrangements are by Lane Funeral Home, 601 Ashland Terrace.
