Baylor School and University of Georgia golf star Harris English placed second Sunday at the WNB Golf Classic in Midland, Texas and will play in this week’s Chattanooga Children’s Hospital Classic at Black Creek Mountain Golf Club.
English shot an 18-under 270 at the Nationwide Tour event and lost to 2008 U.S. Amateur champion Danny Lee on the first playoff hole as English had a bogey and Lee a par.
Lee, who will play in the Korea Open this week, shot a final round 6-under 66 to tie English (3-under) after 72 holes and then won his first Nationwide Tour title, earned $94,500 and moved from 14th to fourth on the money list with $271,700.
In only his second pro event, English won $56,700 and is now 79th on the money list with $59,288. The top 25 after the final four events will earn 2012 PGA Tour Cards.
Ties Course Record: English tied the Midland Country Club course record with a 62 on Saturday and was tied for third entering Sunday’s final round.
English shot 10-under in the third round, played a bogey free round and birdied the final five holes.
The Thomasville, Ga. native won the Children’s Hospital Invitational in Ohio in July as an amateur.
Sunday Youth Clinic: Nationwide Tour player Notah Begay III held a junior clinic Sunday afternoon at First Tee of Chattanooga on Hickory Valley Road.
Begay will be among the 120 players vying for the $90,000 first prize in the Children's Hospital Classic.
He has received one of two sponsor exemptions for the tournament.
"Notah was an excellent choice to lead our clinic at First Tee of Chattanooga as he works well with junior golfers on instruction and technique," said Children's Hospital Classic director Mickey McCamish who has raised $5,000 for First Tee of Chattanooga.
Begay, who was a teammate of Tiger Woods at Stanford, plans to attend Qualifying School later in the fall in an attempt to earn his 2012 PGA Tour Card.
Before suffering a back injury earlier last decade, he won four PGA tour events in 1999 and 2000.
Strong Field in Chattanooga: 2010 Chattanooga Classic champion Scott Gardiner is scheduled to defend his title and will be joined by Ted Potter Jr. who won the Nationwide Tour event in California (Sept. 22-25).
Top 10 finishers at the Midland, Texas event besides English who will be in Chattanooga are Garth Mulroy (third), Bob Heintz and Craig Bowden (both tied for fourth), two players who tied for seventh – David Lingmerth and Miguel Carballo – and the quartet who tied for 10th – third round leader B.J. Staten, (tied for 10th), Darron Stiles, Roger Tambellini and Brandon Todd.
Top 25 Money Leaders: The top three money winners on the Nationwide Tour and seven of the top 10 will play in the Children’s Hospital Classic.
J.J. Killeen, Mathew Goggin and Ted Potter Jr. are 1-2-3 with Killeen leading the way with $409, 473 and two tour wins.
