Lee Women Splits With Brewton-Parker

  • Saturday, April 2, 2011

The Lee University Lady Flames softball team hosted Brewton-Parker College, Saturday, splitting their third consecutive Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) series, winning game one, 8-0, and dropping the second contest 9-5.

The Lee ladies move to 14-11 for the year, 5-5 in SSAC play. With the split, Brewton-Parker moves to 27-10 overall, 8-4 in conference play.

Lee was in control for the entire first contest, scoring three runs in the third inning, and five in the fourth, before closing the run-rule contest after five innings.

Brittany Balough moved to 8-7 on the season, pitching five strong innings of one-hit ball. She faced just one more batter than the minimum, without recording a walk or strikeout.

Charlie Wooden was the leader at the plate for Lee, earning two hits on two official plate appearances, earning one RBI. Danielle Balough also gave a solid performance, going 1-for-2 with a home run, four RBI and two runs scored.

The Lady Barons showed no signs of quit in game two, scoring in each of the final five innings to claim the four run win.

The scoring opened in the top of the third innings, on a sacrifice fly by catcher Sarah Hemphill, and an RBI single by Kelci Leng. Brewton-Parker added one run in the fourth, and another two in the fifth, before the Lady Flames were able to counter in with three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

After the Lady Barons added a single run in the sixth, Jenevieve Cena knocked a two-run double, scoring Kaitlyn Grosch and Taylor Horseman.

With the Lady Flames within one run, Brewton-Parker added three insurance runs in the seventh and held the Lady Flames scoreless in the final frame to preserve the win.

Cena and Horseman led the way at the plate for the Lady Flames in the second contest, each going 3-for-3, and combining for two RBI and three runs scored. Cena came in to the game in the bottom of the first inning, following a scary collision between Hernanza Ruiz and Brewton-Parker second baseman, Britney Kinlaw. Both players sustained injuries that forced them to leave the game.

Sadie Mullins led a 16 hit attack for the Lady Barons, going 4-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Myia Ashmore (12-2) received the win in the circle, working 5 1/3 innings, surrendering five runs, four of them earned on 14 hits. She did not strike out a batter and walked three. Laura Hutchins earned her fifth save of the season, working 1 2/3 hitless innings.

Caitlin Beshears falls to 6-4 on the season, also working 5 1/3 innings, while giving up six runs on 10 hits. (Brittany) Balough gave up three earned runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings of relief.

The Lady Flames head back on the road for an SSAC doubleheader, Monday, at Southern Wesleyan University. They return home for conference doubleheaders Tuesday, Friday and Saturday at Butler Field.
