Beginning July 1, the Georgia Child Restraint Law (Code Sections 40-8-76) will increase the age a child must be properly restrained in a car seat or booster seat from age 6 to age 8. This is required for children while riding in a car, van, SUV or pickup truck. (Exemptions are provided for taxi cabs and public transit vehicles).
The booster seat must be in the rear seat of the vehicle, be appropriate for the child's weight and height, meet all US federal standards and be installed and used according to the manufacturer's instructions.
In an effort to help educate parents, grandparents and guardians on the proper use of booster seats, Safe Kids Walker County will partner with Georgia State Patrol to host a booster seat check event on Thursday, June 30 from 9-12 at the Georgia State Patrol Post #41 on North Main Street in LaFayette.
Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand to provided education about booster seats, their proper use, and installation.
Parents are encouraged to purchase a booster seat prior to this event (sold locally with prices starting at $13.50) or seats will be available at the event for a requested donation of $15. There will also be a limited number of free seats for families in financial need (must qualify for WIC or Medicaid).
