Deep-Sea Explorer Dr. Robert Ballard Comes To Chattanooga

Visit Is Part Of Aquarium's Our Blue Planet Series By NOAA

  • Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Deep-sea explorer Dr. Bob Ballard will give two presentations while in Chattanooga on Thursday, Feb. The first will be an education outreach program for high school and university students hosted at UTC’s Roland Hayes Auditorium at 11 am. Later that evening he will speak to a general audience at the Tennessee Aquarium. Both events are already at capacity.

Dr. Ballard is best known for his historic discoveries of the R.M.S. Titanic, the German battleship Bismarck, the existence of hydrothermal vents and numerous shipwrecks around the world. Dr. Ballard inspires young people to pursue learning in science, math and technology through exploration and discovery. He does so at the Institute for Exploration’s Nautilus Live Theater and exhibit hall in Mystic, Conn. and via the Internet through his Jason Foundation for Education.

Dr. Ballard and his team of scientists explore uncharted frontiers in the deep ocean aboard the research vessel E/V Nautilus. Using advanced ‘telepresence’ technology, Dr. Ballard’s team is able to make biological and archaeological discoveries, map the deepest sea floors and instantly share these ground-breaking missions with others around the world.

Dr. Ballard is president of the Institute for Exploration at Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, Conn. and director of the Institute for Archaeological Oceanography at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography.
