Local GI Doctors Participate In Colonoscopy Performance Study

  • Tuesday, August 26, 2014

The gastroenterology specialty physicians of Galen Medical Group hosted visiting physician, Dr. Michael Wallace, professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Fla.  Dr. Wallace updated the Galen GI physicians on their baseline performance in identifying and removing precancerous colon polyps, a quality criteria these doctors have been studying for years.

The Galen doctors, who include Dr. Colleen Schmitt, Dr. Sumeet Bhushan, Dr. Larry Shuster, Dr. Chad Charapata, Dr. Munford Yates and Dr. Greg Olds perform in the highest 20 percent for detection of precancerous polyps.

According to a study released in the New England Journal of Medicine, every 1 percent improvement in identifying and removing these kinds of polyps translates into a 3 percent reduction in colorectal cancer mortality.

Dr. Wallace remarked that this is the only site where each and every physician has performed in this range of high caliber detection.
