City Council Passes Ordinance Aimed At Dealing With Illegal Tire Dumping

  • Tuesday, April 26, 2016

The City Council on Tuesday passed on first reading an ordinance designed to deal with the continuing issue of illegal tire dumping.

Under the ordinance, there will be permits for tire dealers and tire haulers. The haulers must display stickers showing they are approved by the city to properly dispose of tires.

Tire dealers will be required to keep "manifests" providing information about tire disposals.

A hauler will have to sign a document upon picking up tires and another upon dropping them off at the landfill or a recycling facility.

Those who violate the ordinance will face a possible fine of $50 per tire per day.

Tires that are not for sale do not have to be under cover. However, tires not for sale must be covered.

The city attorney's office said the ordinance does not overlap state laws dealing with handling of tires and cause an undue burden on tire store operators.
