Snodgrass Hill And Horseshoe Ridge Hike Offered April 15

  • Tuesday, March 28, 2017

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will conduct a four-mile, ranger-guided, hike exploring the Snodgrass Hill and Horseshoe Ridge areas of Chickamauga Battlefield on Saturday, April 15, at 9 a.m. This hike begins and ends at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center.

In April 1917, musician George Cohan first wrote the lyrics to the song “Over There,” that encouraged enlistment in the US Army at the outbreak of war. One of the song’s most famous verses included the phrase, “Send the word over there/ That the Yanks are coming.” By the end of the year, thousands of “Yanks” came back to Chickamauga, where they dug in and encamped around Snodgrass Hill.

However, they were hardly the first, or the last, “Yanks” to come here. Their grandfathers defended Snodgrass Hill in September 1863, their fathers trained here in 1898, and their daughters eventually served here during the Second World War.

This hike will cover hilly and uneven terrain around Snodgrass Hill and Horseshoe Ridge. Participants should dress appropriately for the weather, wear supportive footwear, bring water, and  bring a day pack and light trail snacks.
