Irene “Lyn” Ellington Lindsey, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, died peacefully with family on Wednesday, October 21, 2020 at her home.  She was born to the late Walter Lee and Anna Kile Ellington on September 11, 1922.

Lyn, as she preferred to be called beginning her tennis years, which she was most proud of, could be seen every morning playing tennis with her many tennis friends at Manker Patten and earlier the Racket Club.  Her partnered team won numerous matches in the Southern Section of the U.S. Tennis Association bringing the womens team 4.0.  One of her memorable trips was watching the US Open in New York and being fascinated with the players.  Lyn held membership for many years in the Chattanooga Tennis Association and U.S. Tennis Association.

Being selected in her senior year as the Central High School May Queen was an honor she cherished throughout her life.

Prior to her tennis there was work with the Tennessee Valley Authority in Maps and Surveys during the war and after her marriage to Charles in 1944. They moved to Hiwassee Dam, NC from Chattanooga due to U.S. Navy transfer until the war ended in 1945.

Upon moving back to Chattanooga their family grew with the birth of son, Charles “Ted” and daughter, Gaye.  Lyn’s time was filled with PTA, Stuarts Heights Garden Club, Jaycettes, Valamont Woman’s Club and the Chattanooga Opera Guild, just to name a few, and of course designing her yard landscaping with the input of professionals.  Lyn’s church affiliation was St. Peters Episcopal Church as one of the original members of its organization.

Lyn is predeceased by her husband of 75 years, Charles, “the love of her life” beginning as high school sweethearts.  Also her sisters, Louise E. Flatten, Lea E. Wilson, brother, Dr. William Lee Ellington, niece, Mitzy Ellington, and special life-long friend, Helen Mullenix.

She leaves two children and others to cherish her memory; Gaye (Edward) DeMars and Charles “Ted” Lindsey Jr. from Chattanooga, granddaughter, Taylor Lindsey (Chris) Henderson of Georgia; grandson, Blake (Kelly) Lindsey of Florida; and three beautiful great-grandchildren, Izabelle Marie Henderson, Calan Keller Lindsey, Catri Ellington Lindsey, niece, Teri Wilson Latta of N.C. and other loving relatives and friends.

It was Lyn’s wishes to be cremated and buried at sea along with Charles.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Peters Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, TN 37415 or your favorite charity.
