Shirley Ann Bates, 75, of Chattanooga, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020, in a local health care facility. 

She was a graduate of Howard High School and was of the Baptist faith. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Jackie Bates, Jr.; mother, Cornelia Crutcher McConnell; adoptive father, Charles McConnell, Sr.; sisters, Jan McConnell, Sonia McConnell, and Marketta Green; brother, Charles McConnell, Jr. 

Survivors include her son, Steven Bates of Chattanooga; daughters, Annisa Bates, Belinda Bates, both of Chattanooga, and Sharon Harmon of Atlanta, GA; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; father, Reverend Lawrence Childress of Huntsville, AL; brother, Roy “Chess” (Zeddie) McConnell; sisters, Mary (Van) McConnell and Christine Williams, all of Chattanooga; several nieces; nephews; cousins; other relatives and friends. 

Shirley will lie in state on Monday, Dec. 14, from 12:30-5 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. 

A family service will be on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel. Burial will be in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
