Lee University’s School of Nursing hosted the Lower East Tennessee regional competition for Health Occupations Students of America. This event welcomed hundreds of students to Lee’s campus for a full day of activities.
HOSA is an international student organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Education Division of Association for Career and Technical Education.
“HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation, and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary, adult, and collegiate students enrolled in health science education and biomedical science programs or have interests in pursuing careers in health professions,” said Christina Isong, state advisor for HOSA and FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America).
High school students from the East Tennessee region participated in various competitions and leadership/educational sessions throughout the day. Topics such as forensic medicine, dental science, interview skills, clinical nursing, and State Officer Candidate testing were featured. Lee University also hosted the HOSA Bowl.
“Hosting the HOSA competition is a fantastic opportunity for us each year,” said Jake Fast, Lee’s School of Nursing enrollment and advising specialist. “The students involved are excellent representatives of their schools. We love having them on campus and giving them a glimpse of the exceptional programs that Lee University offers for their future endeavors.”
According to HOSA's two-fold mission, its goal is to both promote career opportunities in the health care industry and to enhance the delivery of quality health care to all people. HOSA's goal is also to encourage all health science instructors and students to join and be actively involved in the HSE-HOSA partnership.
“HOSA's mission is especially critical when considering the acute shortage of qualified workers for the health care industry,” said Ms. Isong.
